Your nervous system is the master system of the body that controls how well you function. Your nervous system’s health and ability to function depends on many things such as nutrition and oxygen, but most importantly the quantity and quality of information it receives from receptors located throughout your body. The largest contribution comes from your joints and muscles. The Chiropractic Neurologist’s treatment is receptor-based and focuses on improving and/or restoring the areas of the nervous system which have become dysfunctional through trauma, diet, stress, posture, and disease. Subtle changes in the function of the nervous system will affect things such as muscle tone, flexibility, balance and coordination and may result in chronic pain, headaches and other related symptoms.

Chiropractic Neurology is brain-based chiropractic and combines the best of neurological science with traditional chiropractic. It is a scientifically based field of natural health care that centers on evaluating the function and balance of the nervous system and then using specific treatment applications to assist in restoring function and eliminating pain.

Typically, in most injuries, there is a muscular imbalance and muscle weakness patterns that are caused by functional imbalances within the brain. This is termed hemisphericity. Hemisphericity results in altered spinal mechanics and dysfunction of the spinal and peripheral joints, predisposing the body to conditions such as pinched nerves, rotator cuff problems, impingement syndromes, tennis elbow, iliotibial band syndromes, plantar fasciitis, chronic neck and lower back pain, etc.

Frequently, hemisphericity also has autonomic consequences leading to cardiac disease (i.e. Arrhythmias, increased heart rate), hypertension, reduced oxygen perfusion and other symptoms associated with increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Increased sympathetic activity is associated with increased sensitization to pain and chronic pain states. This, coupled with reduced oxygen perfusion, hinders recovery from injury and predisposes to long- term pain and disability. Other autonomic symptoms that can result from hemisphericity are dizziness, nausea, migraines, vertigo, and headaches. Hemisphericity also plays a major role in developmental delay syndromes as well, such as ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, autism and dyspraxia.

Knowing how to assess for hemisphericity and how to specifically treat the individuals' needs is the role of the Chiropractic Neurologist. A Chiropractic Neurologist will diagnose and effectively treat such problems by addressing the underlying cause and using receptor-based procedures to return the system to proper function. The treatments could include spinal manipulations, color, and light therapy, brain-based visual and auditory stimulation, eye exercises, and balance based training just to name a few. This helps prevent recurrences of the same problems, meaning you will get better responses to your treatments and will heal faster.
